Strategic Planning is about knowing where you're going and how to get there. It's also about taking your eyes off of the piles of work on your desk to see the bigger picture. And finally, it's about implementing your plan and measuring your results. While it may not be your favorite work activity, it can be one of the most productive.
After 25 years working in both the non-profit and government sectors, I've seen it all. Planning efforts that took years to complete and looked really good on paper but were never implemented. People who moved directly to action steps without a clear vision. Planning teams that didn't have all the right players and couldn't move their ideas forward. And rarely, groups that came together, found a common purpose and were able to make it work.
